A California food manufacturer has recalled one of its best-known products after a TikTok user allegedly discovered a dead mouse floating inside a jar of peperoncinis.
Mezzetta announced a voluntary recall of its Golden Creek Peperoncini (Medium Heat) after two viral TikTok videos appeared to show a possible pest inside the 32-ounce jar.
“That’s why they’re in clear jars. You always have to check for dead mice before buying,” one commenter wrote beneath one of the videos.
“That’s literally the only good brand for pickled peppers. I’m sick,” another user posted.
After the videos gained attention, Mezzetta recalled the 32-ounce product and contacted the consumer as it began investigating the report, according to an FDA announcement issued Saturday.
“We have requested to retrieve and examine the product involved in the original consumer report and are reviewing the relevant production, sanitation and food-safety records as part of our ongoing investigation,” the FDA said.

The agency added that it “immediately took action to identify where the product was distributed” and worked with affected customers to quarantine and remove it from sale. Further steps will be taken if necessary as the investigation continues.
No illnesses or injuries had been reported when the announcement was issued.
The recall follows another product pull involving a California-based company. Earlier this month, the FDA recalled four varieties of raw-milk cheese made by Sierra Nevada Graziers after E. coli cases were reported across nine states.
Nearly 2,000 products, including Cheerios, Skittles and Pringles, were also recalled in December 2025 after the FDA found evidence of rodent and bird contamination at a distribution facility.
Mezzetta is headquartered in American Canyon in Napa Valley. The company produces and distributes olives, pickled vegetables and pasta sauces, among other foods.
