With its sprawling MCU mythology, “VisionQuest” could be Marvel Studios’ most lore-heavy Disney+ series to date. The Looper video above offers a streamlined refresher on everything viewers need to remember before tuning in.
Paul Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader reprises his role as the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” villain Ultron. The series picks up directly from Marvel’s first Disney+ show, “WandaVision.” In that series, grief-stricken Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) encased the town of Westview in a magical Hex, controlling its residents and forcing them to perform sitcom-style roles as she tried to cope with Vision’s death in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
The version of Vision Wanda created for her Westview fantasy ultimately disappeared, but a reconstructed, pale-white version of the original android survived. Deprived of the experiences that had made him more human, this rebooted Vision initially reacted with hostility. Wanda’s creation eventually persuaded him to stand down by invoking the Ship of Theseus philosophical paradox. In “VisionQuest,” White Vision must confront that unresolved identity crisis and determine what he truly is.
VisionQuest brings several MCU artificial intelligences back
The first “VisionQuest” trailer also unveiled Ultron’s long-awaited return and teased several artificial-intelligence entities connected to Vision’s mind. Among the most intriguing is James D’Arcy’s J.A.R.V.I.S., who takes the form of Edwin Jarvis, the Stark family’s former butler. The character is best known from “Agent Carter,” though he has also appeared in “Avengers: Endgame” and “What If…?”
Tommy Maximoff, played by Ruaridh Mollica, is another key figure making a return. Tommy is one of Wanda and Vision’s magically created sons from “WandaVision.” His twin brother Billy, portrayed by Joe Locke, was previously shown to have survived the collapse of the Hex in the spin-off series “Agatha All Along,” a revelation that is expected to carry major significance in the new story.
Those familiar faces represent only a fraction of the deeper Marvel mythology that “VisionQuest” is expected to explore. Looper has already shared several major predictions for the series, and the video above provides additional context ahead of its debut on October 14.
