Sen. Katie Britt’s stunned reaction went viral Tuesday after a perjury accusation against former Special Counsel Jack Smith quickly unraveled during a congressional hearing.
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claimed Smith had misrepresented whether he coordinated his case against President Trump with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Schmitt cited text messages that appeared to place Smith “in Atlanta” for a “Hawks game” in February 2024.
But the dramatic allegation collapsed within moments. Smith clarified that he had attended a women’s college basketball game featuring the Maryland Terrapins and Iowa Hawkeyes—teams that can sometimes be referred to as the “Hawks”—and said he was not in Atlanta or meeting with Willis.
As Schmitt’s perjury argument fell apart, cameras focused on Britt, R-Ala., who was seated beside him. Her wide-eyed, visibly stunned expression spread rapidly across social media.
Jessiah Eberlin, host of the left-leaning “Pondering Politics” podcast, called Britt’s reaction a “look of UTTER HORROR.”

Podcaster Noel Fogelman added the upbeat theme from “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to a video clip of the exchange, heightening the moment’s comedic effect.
