More than 37,000 squishy dumpling toys sold across the United States have been recalled because the beads inside could create a potentially fatal health risk for children.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced two recalls on Thursday, warning that swallowed beads could expand inside a child’s body, causing choking or a potentially deadly intestinal blockage.
One recall covers 37,000 toys sold by ABC Trading. The nationwide recall includes the company’s Squishy Dumpling Toys and Crazy Squib Ball Toys.
The toys were sold in stores from April through June this year, with prices ranging from 41 cents to $1.25 each, according to the CPSC alert.
The agency also recalled 480 Mochi Malrang Mystery Dumpling toys sold by LLK Trading. Those products were distributed in California.
No illnesses or injuries linked to the recalled toys have been reported. All of the products were imported into the US from China.
Consumers who bought any of the affected dumpling toys should stop using them immediately. They can either throw the toys away or return them to the seller for a full refund.
To request a refund, consumers should write “RECALLED” on the toy with permanent marker, place it in the trash and send the manufacturer a photograph showing the discarded product.

The Mochi Dumpling Toy, distributed in California by LLK Trading, is among the products recalled.

One of more than 37,000 squishy dumpling toys distributed nationwide by ABC Trading that have been recalled.
Squishy dumplings became viral toys this summer. Designed to be squeezed and stretched, they were marketed both as playthings and as stress-relief products.
However, parents and experts have raised concerns after reports of newly opened toys giving off strong chemical or gasoline-like smells, “exploding” and releasing contents that caused burns.
Testing has also found potentially cancer-causing compounds in fumes from some of the toys.
For the two latest recalls, though, officials specifically cited the risk posed by the toys’ beads if they are swallowed by young children.
The CPSC said the toys violate mandatory safety standards because the water beads inside them can expand beyond the permitted size, creating a potentially deadly ingestion hazard.
If swallowed, a bead can cause choking or an intestinal obstruction. Officials warned that this could lead to severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration and a risk of death.
ABC Trading’s Squishy Dumpling Toys are available in multiple translucent colors and contain glitter and water beads. Each toy features a cartoon face and comes in a tan plastic container shaped like a bamboo steamer, with “SQUISHY DUMPLING” printed on the removable packaging.
The Crazy Squib Ball Toys also come in several colors and are individually packaged in white netting. The words “Squeeze it! Throw it!” appear on the front of the packaging.
