Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live Saturday, backing host Dakota Johnson by stepping into the role of her “break-up therapist” before offering a special shoutout to her new husband, NFL star Travis Kelce.
Swift and Johnson have grown especially close in recent weeks. Johnson appeared in the pop star’s music video for “Patient Zero,” which premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards last week.
Johnson later presented Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Award and joined Colin Farrell in another of her music videos. On Saturday, Swift returned the gesture by surprising Johnson during her SNL opening monologue.
Johnson brought viewers up to date on her life since her last hosting appearance, using her recent breakups as material for a series of jokes.
“I went through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians. Looking for a third,” she quipped.
She then connected the joke to her upcoming film, Verity, saying that dating musicians is, much like the movie, a “psychosexual erotic thriller.”
“But I have really good friends. They don’t judge me for dating these men. They’re actually really supportive,” Johnson added.
Johnson introduced Swift as her “literal therapist,” prompting the singer to walk onstage in a gray plaid dress as the studio audience erupted in applause.

Swift and Johnson are longtime friends and professional collaborators. Johnson starred in Swift’s music video for “Patient Zero,” which premiered last week.
“I’m not—I’m not your therapist, actually. You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some,” Swift replied.
“And then you flop on my couch and overshare, and every so often I just say, ‘Damn, that’s crazy,’” she continued.
“Is that not a therapist?” Johnson shot back.
Johnson then joked that women everywhere should appreciate her willingness to date misunderstood musicians, adding that people in “England and parts of Ireland and Cleveland” had the most reason to be thankful.
After Johnson referenced Kelce’s hometown, Swift celebrated her husband with a loud “Woo-woo” for the crowd.

The pop star recently released encore tracks from her 2025 album, The Life of a Showgirl. The additions included “Cleveland!,” a song dedicated to her husband, as well as “Patient Zero.”
Swift has a long history with the SNL stage. In 2023, she appeared at the studio with Kelce to introduce her friend and collaborator Ice Spice as the musical guest.
She previously hosted the program in 2009 and returned as a musical guest in 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Swift cheered when Johnson mentioned her husband’s hometown, Cleveland. She recently released a song with the same name in his honor.

Fans speculated Swift could pop by, as she and Johnson have long had a public friendship and collaboration.
Earlier this month at the Emmys, Swift also made a cameo in a pre-recorded sketch with her longtime friend and the show’s host, Mariska Hargitay.
During the skit, the cast of Law & Order SVU attempted to crack the code on whether she would appear at the Emmys.
Although Swift was caught up at an NFL game for her husband, she popped in for the skit, and a ‘Saturday Night Live’ emblem appeared behind her, tacked to a bulletin board.
Johnson and Swift have been friends for years and have professionally collaborated multiple times.
The pop star wrote and recorded a song for Johnson’s film, Fifty Shades Darker, called I Don’t Want to Live Forever with Zayn.

Swifties went wild online after the surprise appearance, with one writing on X, ‘Dakota is so real because if I was friends with Taylor Swift too, I’d also force her to be my therapist.’
‘This being the most accurate way to introduce Taylor Swift,’ another joked.
‘Taylor Swift on Saturday night live supporting Dakota Johnson OH MY GOD,’ a third added.
Saturday was Johnson’s third time hosting SNL. Turnstile joined her as the musical guest. Shane Gillis is set to host the show next week with musical guest Rosalía.
