University of Arizona halts fraternity activities following ‘egregious’ misconduct allegations

The University of Arizona has suspended activities for every Interfraternity Council chapter following what school officials described as an “egregious” surge in misconduct reports, according to an internal memo obtained by The Post.

By Monday, university officials were investigating allegations involving approximately half of the school’s 21 IFC fraternities. The complaints include physical assault, hazing, drug and alcohol use, and conduct that allegedly created unsafe conditions for students, Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman wrote in a letter to the chapters.

Lieberman called both the volume of cases and the seriousness of the allegations “egregious,” adding that some fraternity investigations had also drawn the attention of law enforcement.

The number of reports has overwhelmed the Dean of Students Office, leaving staff struggling to manage the volume of organizational misconduct cases, the memo said.

“The Dean of Students Office is at capacity for the number of organizational cases our staff can reasonably investigate at one time, and every one of those cases involves an IFC chapter,” Lieberman wrote.

Because the investigations will take time, the dean warned that the chapters’ ability to hold events, take part in philanthropy and educate new members will be affected.

University administrators and campus police will meanwhile pursue “swift remedial and interim actions,” Lieberman said.

“We will do our part to hold every chapter and member accountable for their actions,” she wrote.

The suspension took effect immediately. Fraternities may not host, attend, sponsor or participate in organized group events until chapter representatives meet with Lieberman as part of the first in a series of quarterly “mandatory advisor meetings,” according to the memo.

No event may be registered until a chapter has returned to good standing, Lieberman said.

The dean also noted that multiple fraternities remain under disciplinary measures for violating the University of Arizona’s student conduct code during the spring 2026 semester.

Lieberman emphasized that Greek life is facing increased scrutiny across the country.

“It is time for the University of Arizona Greek community to step up and set an example for good. It is time to have difficult conversations with each other and the members of the community,” she wrote.

“You have a part in what happens next. The time for change is now,” Lieberman concluded.

The Post has contacted the IFC president for comment.
