Two California children, ages 4 and 10, were fatally shot in broad daylight, allegedly by their father, according to reports. Witnesses on a passing bus and people nearby reportedly saw the violence unfold.

“Oh my God, I was on the bus when it happened,” a witness says in Citizen App footage recorded after the shooting in Los Angeles, according to local ABC affiliate KABC.

The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Metro confirmed to local CW affiliate KTLA that a Metro bus became part of the investigation and crime scene in the Pico-Union neighborhood. According to the outlet, a woman aboard the bus witnessed the incident Sunday afternoon near Catalina Street and Venice Boulevard at about 12:40 p.m. She reportedly shouted for the driver to stop in an attempt to help the children.

“Police investigating a shooting in the Pico-Union area have requested video footage from a Metro bus, which was passing through the area at the time and may have captured the incident,” a Metro spokesperson said in a statement to KTLA. “The Los Angeles Police Department is leading the investigation.”

The man accused of shooting the children was hospitalized after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound and remains in police custody at the hospital. His condition was not immediately available. Authorities believe he is between 30 and 40 years old.

The children, whose names have not been released publicly, were taken to a local hospital, where medical staff pronounced them dead, according to reports.

An LAPD spokesperson told KTLA and the Los Angeles Times that the incident appeared to be a “possible attempted murder-suicide.” Investigators believe the suspect was the children’s father. Authorities have not released further details.

“He shot himself in the head,” another witness is heard saying in the Citizen App video, repeating the statement moments later.
