A gunman opened fire on a California television station early Tuesday, frightening employees at a newsroom that had already been targeted in a similar shooting just days earlier.
Bakersfield police are investigating after someone fired multiple rounds at the KBAK/KBFX newsroom late Friday night and again early Tuesday morning.
No station employees were injured in either shooting. However, the person responsible for both attacks remains at large.
Surveillance footage shows a black vehicle arriving outside the station and waiting. About two minutes later, several muzzle flashes appear from the driver’s-side window before the vehicle speeds away.
Police said 10 rounds were fired into a conference room and an office last Friday, followed by additional gunfire that struck the station early Tuesday. KBAK/KBFX said it is cooperating with investigators.
“We are cooperating fully with the Bakersfield Police Department as it investigates a shooting incident at our KBAK/KBFX studios Friday evening,” Jessica Belluci of Sinclair, Inc. said.
“Thankfully, no one was injured. The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority, and we are taking appropriate steps to ensure a safe and secure workplace. We appreciate the efforts of local law enforcement as the investigation continues.”
Shelby Martin, a weekend anchor and reporter, addressed the shooting in an Instagram post early Tuesday.
“I am very grateful that my colleagues are safe and nobody was hurt in Friday’s shooting at the station,” Martin said. “We will continue to provide updates on the air and online.”
Authorities have not determined whether the two shootings were connected. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
