A transgender woman accused of killing a Chicago man in a 13-stab attack allegedly left a fragment of the knife lodged in his skull after he reportedly mocked her gender, according to authorities and news reports.
Kelly Day, 32, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the Oct. 7 killing of 50-year-old Larry Young near a gas station on Chicago’s South Side, the Chicago Police Department said in a news release obtained by News Outlet.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the confrontation occurred in front of Day’s 7-year-old stepson and began after Young allegedly made remarks about Day’s gender.
At a Saturday detention hearing, prosecutors said surveillance footage from the gas station captured Day stabbing Young 13 times in the head, neck and shoulders.

An autopsy found that part of the knife blade had snapped off and remained inside Young’s skull, the Tribune reported.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Young as a Chicago resident and determined that he died at 7:26 p.m. Oct. 7 from multiple sharp-force injuries. His death was classified as a homicide.
Day told investigators she acted in self-defense, alleging that Young used a slur, threatened her and her wife, and made a motion that suggested he was carrying a gun, according to the Tribune.
Prosecutors said Day, who was assigned male at birth and identifies as a woman, had been ridiculed earlier that day after using the women’s restroom at a McDonald’s, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to prosecutors, the incident upset Day, who later discussed the taunts with her wife.
Young, who reportedly did not know Day, approached the family as they walked along East 87th Street.
An argument followed after Young allegedly commented on Day’s gender. Day’s wife attempted to intervene, but prosecutors said the dispute continued. Young eventually pushed Day before walking toward a gas station across the street.
Day followed him, and the confrontation escalated into a deadly attack, prosecutors said.
After the stabbing, Day allegedly called 911 and reported being injured while defending herself. She left the scene before police arrived, however.

Prosecutors said Day discarded the knife, which officers later recovered with part of its blade missing.
Day later placed another 911 call and claimed she had cut herself while cooking, prosecutors said.
Chicago police and the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Day at approximately 10:50 p.m. Oct. 7, less than four hours after the fatal stabbing.
During Saturday’s detention hearing, Judge John Hock ordered Day held in custody pending trial, citing the severity of the alleged attack.
Day was scheduled to return to court Tuesday.
