The Virginia-born actress completed the look with tan strappy sandals, while her long brunette hair fell freely around her face. Soft pink blush and matching lipstick added the finishing touches to her makeup.

Clooney, 52, kept close to his Miss Congeniality co-star and looked equally polished in a navy pinstripe suit paired with a white shirt featuring blue stripes.

He tucked sunglasses into his blazer pocket and kept the rest of his accessories understated, opting for a black belt and matching black shoes.

Bullock and Clooney laughed together and appeared to savour the occasion ahead of the film’s first screening. In Gravity, they play astronauts fighting to survive aboard a damaged space shuttle.

Clooney travelled from his Lake Como home by coach with Sandra and her two-year-old son, Louis, whom she adopted in 2010. After arriving the previous day, they explored Venice by taxi boat and took in the city’s sights and sounds.

The festival’s pre-opening event was held on Tuesday at the Campo San Polo Arena. It featured a screening of Francesco Rosi’s 1963 film Le mani sulla città (Hands Over the City).

Directed by Alberto Barbera, the 70th festival will run from August 28 to September 7.

The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms.

The jury will award prizes for feature-length films, including the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion for Best Director and a new award, the Grand Jury Prize.

A total of twenty films will vie for the coveted Golden Lion at the world's oldest film festival, and include Terry Gilliam's The Zero Theorem, starring Christoph Waltz as a reclusive computer genius, and Peter Landesman's Parkland, which looks into what happened at Dallas' Parkland hospital the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Director of the festival, Alberto Barbera, said in an interview about the number of bleak films amongst this year's line-up: 'Perhaps one of the strongest themes that emerges from all the films is the lack of prospects. There's an acknowledgment of an extremely problematic situation, in some cases tragic,' Barbera told a news conference.

'Cinema mirrors reality, so we can't complain if auteur films today gives us an image of our times that is not consoling.'
