President Trump said Thursday that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) could be forced out of Congress if it is determined that she used a “fake name” when she took the oath of office.
“It’s not looking good,” Trump said while discussing Omar’s legal troubles. His remarks followed the release of court filings in a federal immigration fraud investigation that identified the congresswoman’s surname as Elmi — the same surname used by her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who has also been rumored to be her biological brother.
“She used a fake name to be sworn in,” Trump declared at a rally in Iowa. “I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.”
The president urged rally attendees to “please inform our great Speaker of the House of Representatives … that the Democrat Party has just conceded her seat. That Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to fraud, and she will not be legally allowed to be a member of that august body any longer.”
“She won’t be able,” Trump continued. “I mean, I don’t know: If you get sworn in with a false name, I would imagine that’s pretty tough to remain.”
In a filing submitted Wednesday in federal court in Washington, DC, prosecutors referred to the Minnesota Democrat as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
A source familiar with the investigation confirmed that Omar’s “real” last name is not Omar and said she was born with the surname Elmi.
Representatives for Omar did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
Trump also ridiculed what he characterized as Omar’s weak denial that her former husband could be a blood relative.
“Not to my knowledge,” Omar said Wednesday on MS NOW when asked directly whether she was related to her former husband.
Trump described the response as “one of the worst answers I think I’ve ever heard.”

“You know I’ve heard some bad political answers … but that would be about the worst,” the president said. He argued that Omar “didn’t know whether or not she married her brother.”
Trump, a longtime critic of Omar, also called her a “scammer.”
“I’m pretty good at watching that stuff, and she’s been a scammer for a long time,” he said.
Earlier this week, Trump said Omar could face prison if she is convicted of immigration fraud.
“She could go to jail,” Trump said Tuesday. “They keep talking about deportation.”
Omar has said she became a US citizen at 17 through her father, who was naturalized in 2000, five years after immigrating to the United States.
She has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
During the rally, Trump also announced that his administration would use federal funds to expand domestic diesel and gasoline production.
“In more breaking news, my administration is using the Defense Production Act to release $150 million to increase American refining capacity to produce more diesel and more gasoline at record levels,” the president said.
In a statement, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the funds “will be used strategically and in partnership with private industry to rapidly bolster America’s existing energy infrastructure.â€
“By restoring energy addition policies, we will continue to unleash American energy dominance and lower costs for the American people,†Wright added.
