During Thursday’s broadcast of MS NOW’s “Deadline,” host Al Sharpton predicted that Democrats would launch an aggressive series of congressional investigations if they regained control of the House. “You will see hearings like you never saw before,” he said.
Host Ari Melber was discussing Corey Lewandowski, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump who worked on his early 2016 campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire and remained loyal through several investigations. Melber noted that Lewandowski had previously appeared on the program when he was willing to give interviews, adding that Trump would seemingly be unlikely to support the kind of “revenge prosecutions” pursued against some former Republicans or former MAGA allies. Still, Melber said, someone within the Justice Department apparently believes there is enough evidence to warrant an investigation.

Sharpton said the situation suggested not only that someone believed there was “enough smoke,” but also that some officials were looking ahead to a possible Democratic House majority. If Democrats win control, he said, they would hold the gavel and chair the Judiciary Committee, giving them subpoena power. Justice Department employees could then be questioned under oath about whether information had been concealed, Sharpton argued. Witnesses would face a choice between invoking the Fifth Amendment, resigning and jeopardizing their future, or telling the truth. He warned that officials could also face contempt of Congress and potential jail time, saying they would be unlikely to perjure themselves before televised hearings.
