Sheriff’s Department Issues Update on Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Case Nine Months Later

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that investigators remain focused on DNA analysis as they work with the Nancy Guthrie Task Force to move the missing-person investigation forward.

“Earlier this month, investigators traveled to Florida to meet with lab scientists and explore additional ways to advance this case,” the department said in a post on X. “Several ideas were discussed, and we continue working with all of our partners to solve this case.”

The agency also urged the public to continue sharing information, emphasizing that no detail is insignificant.

“Even the smallest piece of information could be critical to this investigation,” PCSD said.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home on Feb. 1.

The 84-year-old was last seen just before 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, after a relative drove her to her residence in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

Investigators have not identified a suspect or person of interest, even though a masked man was captured on Guthrie’s Ring doorbell camera.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said shortly after the disappearance that Guthrie had been taken. During a news conference, he stated, “She did not leave on her own. We know that.”

In July, authorities released two ransom notes connected to Guthrie’s kidnapping.

The first note, sent Feb. 2, claimed Guthrie was unharmed and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency in exchange for her release.

A second message, sent four days later on Feb. 6, claimed that Guthrie had died soon after being abducted.

When the notes were made public in late July, authorities said they featured a distinctive writing style. Investigators asked anyone who recognized the language or patterns to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI.

Investigators said late last month that they had received information about a possible new ransom note tied to Guthrie’s disappearance.

“The PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” the sheriff’s department said in a late-September post on X.

The agency added that investigators were reviewing social media discussions about the note and working to determine whether the information was credible.

Anyone with information should call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact 520-88-CRIME.
