Dramatic footage appears to show an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer pushing a gun into the face of an unarmed bystander during a tense operation in California.
The confrontation unfolded shortly before 8:30 a.m. Friday in North Hollywood, after federal agents pulled a man from the sidewalk and took him into custody, witness Damari Butler told the Los Angeles Times.
Butler, who filmed the encounter, said he had been sitting on his balcony when he saw two masked agents suddenly tackle a man without warning.
“There was no asking his name, no ID, nothing. They just grabbed him,” Butler recalled.
The confrontation came as President Trump’s administration presses ahead with its immigration crackdown. Republicans have sought to promote those efforts before this week’s midterm elections, even as polls suggest the party could suffer major losses.
The video initially showed two ICE agents detaining a man while a bystander walked past with two dogs.
Seconds later, a third agent rushed toward the dog walker and ordered him to move back. The man had picked up a can of pepper spray and appeared to be moving it out of the way, Butler said.
The masked agent then shoved the bystander into a bush and pointed a gun at his face as the dogs barked, according to the video.
The man was quickly released and shouted: “What the f** is wrong with you?”

The three agents remained in the street as the detained man continued to scream.
People in the background asked whether anyone had recorded the encounter while agents lifted the handcuffed man by his arms and legs and attempted to place him in an SUV.
As the agents struggled, the dog walker repeatedly asked whether anyone had captured the vehicle’s license plate. Another SUV then arrived at the scene.
“They’re hurting him! They’re hurting him!” the bystander yelled.
One of the masked agents again chased after the bystander as he ran away shouting.
The camera then turned back toward the three agents, who appeared to be struggling to get the handcuffed man inside the vehicle.

Most Americans support immigration reform, following record levels of illegal crossings at the southern border during President Joe Biden’s single term in office.
Immigration numbers fell sharply under Trump’s tougher enforcement policies, although tactics used by ICE and Department of Homeland Security agents have drawn criticism from both the left and the right.
Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem left office in disgrace after two anti-ICE protesters, Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, were shot and killed on the streets of Minneapolis.
Earlier this week, the federal government denied reports that ICE and DHS agents would monitor polling stations during Tuesday’s midterm elections. Noncitizens are prohibited from voting in federal elections.
Republicans nevertheless remain eager to highlight their immigration record before voters go to the polls.
Polling indicates that the party could lose control of the House of Representatives and may also be at risk of losing the Senate.
President Trump’s deeply unpopular war in Iran, along with rising living costs, has left many Americans who supported the MAGA movement in 2024 less inclined to vote for him again, if the polls are accurate.
Historically Republican states such as Texas and Kansas could even turn Democratic, although senior Republicans, including Trump, have dismissed the polls as unreliable.
