George finally becomes a trendy teenager! Prince is seen wearing an Adidas Aston Villa jacket and sports a sharp haircut after years of stuffy suits

With his hair tousled, shoulders drawn against the cold and the familiar three stripes of an Adidas jacket on display, Prince George looked every bit the regular football supporter as he watched Aston Villa take on Barcelona beside his father.

The setting offered the only real hint that this was no ordinary father-and-son outing. They were seated in the presidential box, while the baseball cap worn by the man beside George did little to conceal that he was the Prince of Wales and Britain’s future king.

There was something notably relaxed about the image of George dressed in football casuals.

The scene contrasted sharply not only with childhood photographs of his father and uncle, Prince Harry, who were often seen at formal engagements in the traditional upper-class uniform of tweed, crisp shirts and ties, but also with George’s own earlier appearances at matches. On those occasions, he has generally worn a smart suit or the more conventional schoolboy pairing of a jumper and collared shirt.

This time, however, the 13-year-old appeared more mature: a young man beginning to establish his own style and identity, seemingly unconcerned by traditional expectations of royal clothing.

Yet the seemingly ordinary photograph may reveal something more meaningful about the way William and Kate have decided to bring up their eldest son.

Royal observers have long suggested that the couple have drawn inspiration from the parenting approach of the late Princess Diana.

Diana was arguably the first modern royal to recognise the value of exposing her children to everyday life beyond the palace and its gilded surroundings.

She famously took William and Harry to Thorpe Park and McDonald’s, as well as to the cinema and on numerous ordinary outings, determined that they should experience some of the simple pleasures enjoyed by other children.

Her belief was that royal status should not leave children cut off from the world around them.

William, who has spoken candidly about the lasting influence of his mother, appears keen to offer his own children the same grounding.

Although rugby has traditionally been the sport of choice for many men in his social circle, William is a committed football supporter and regularly attends Aston Villa matches, having long backed the club.

His enthusiasm for the sport also creates a natural connection with the public. Football is one of the few institutions capable of crossing class and social boundaries, and William’s passion gives the future king an especially relatable quality.

In a rare interview last year, William provided an insight into the family life he and Kate have sought to build for their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

Speaking to Schitt’s Creek actor Eugene Levy for his Apple TV series The Reluctant Traveler, he said: ‘Getting the balance of work and family life right is really important, because for me the most important thing in my life is family and everything is about the future.’

He continued: ‘If you don’t start the children off now with a happy, healthy, stable home, I feel you’re setting them up for a bit of a hard time and a fall.’

Having grown up with a mother who was once the most photographed woman in the world, William understands the intense pressure that accompanies life in the public eye.

He is likely determined that George should be able to enjoy his love of football, just like any other teenage boy, before taking on the immense responsibilities attached to the Crown.

For while George may disappear into the crowd in his sports jacket, he is not simply another royal child. As the future king, his childhood will inevitably differ from that of his younger siblings.

William must prepare his son for a position he has yet to occupy himself, while also making sure that the weight of George’s future does not dominate every moment of his youth.

It is a difficult balance: allowing George the ordinary freedoms of football, clothes and friendships while gradually helping him understand that he will one day lead The Firm.

William has previously suggested that the breakdown of his parents’ marriage affected his own sense of security during childhood.

Reflecting on the importance of a stable home, he said: ‘I think it’s really important that the atmosphere is created at home. You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security, love.

‘That was certainly part of my childhood. My parents got divorced when I was eight, so that lasted a short period of time.’

That experience may help explain why he appears so focused on creating the stable family environment he considers vital to raising emotionally secure children.

Kate has also frequently highlighted the value of outdoor activities and sport for children’s mental health and wellbeing, along with the confidence and resilience such experiences can build.

Princess Charlotte, for example, plays netball and recently took part in a tournament alongside her school friends—an experience that encourages teamwork and teaches children how to compete with their peers.

Together, William and Kate appear to be managing a uniquely royal compromise: giving their children the privileges attached to their position while keeping them connected to the everyday experiences of childhood.

Seen in that light, the image of George at the football is more than a charming photograph of a father and son enjoying a match. It offers a glimpse into a parenting philosophy William appears to have inherited from his mother.

George must be allowed to be a boy before he becomes king. Perhaps that is the most lasting lesson William learned from Diana: that the strongest preparation for an extraordinary life begins with experiencing plenty of the ordinary.
