Samantha Kimberly (Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office).
A Colorado mother has been sentenced to spend the rest of her life behind bars after abusing her 3-year-old son for months, ultimately resulting in his death.
Samantha Kimberly received a life sentence Wednesday, one month after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse, according to a statement from the Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office.
During the three-day trial, several witnesses testified that the boy and his 14-month-old brother had endured months of abuse. The older child suffered a catastrophic brain injury and later died.
Deputies with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office were called to a Pueblo West residence on June 8, 2024, after receiving a report that the toddler was “unconscious and breathing abnormally.” Authorities said the child had visible injuries. He was flown to a hospital, where he later died.
Kimberly’s teenage son was also found with visible injuries and was transported to a hospital for medical care. The Department of Human Services took custody of him. Kimberly initially faced felony child abuse charges, but prosecutors added a murder count after the unidentified 3-year-old died.

Brittany Farmer, another woman charged in connection with the case, was convicted of child abuse and sentenced last year to 45 years in prison, local CBS affiliate KKTV reported.
Authorities have not publicly released detailed information about the abuse, but the case has deeply affected investigators, prosecutors and others involved.
“I am deeply saddened and quite frankly, angry with the horrific details of this tragic situation,” Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero said after the incident, according to KKTV. “This is one of the worst abuse cases I have seen in my 24 years in law enforcement. No child should have to be subjected to this kind of torture and abuse.”
District Attorney Kala Beauvais issued the following statement:
“Today’s sentencing brings this tragic case to a close and holds the defendant accountable for the murder of her son and the abuse she inflicted upon her children. We are grateful for the teamwork in ensuring these children had a voice in the courtroom. This case will leave a lasting impact on everyone involved and will be remembered as one of the worst cases they encountered.”
