LIV Golf Loses $300 Million Funding as Potential Shutdown Looms

LIV Golf is likely to pursue liquidation after BC Partners’ lending division withdrew from a plan to provide as much as $300 million for the league’s proposed 2027 relaunch, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.

The investment firm stepped away as a financing deadline neared, with LIV still short of the number of players it needed to sign for the 2027 season. LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 8 after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced that it would end its financial support following the 2026 season.

The proposed comeback, dubbed LIV Golf 2.0, would have retained the league’s team-based format, offered players ownership stakes and scheduled at least 10 tournaments. Roughly half of those events were expected to be held outside the United States.

BC Partners Credit, the investment firm’s lending arm, announced an initial financing commitment in October as part of the proposed deal. The agreement was contingent on the league securing enough players. Axios reported that at least 30 golfers had expressed interest, although some representatives were still negotiating financial details as bankruptcy-court deadlines approached.

Players also had to consider how joining the proposed league could affect their careers beyond LIV. According to the Associated Press, the DP World Tour said golfers who signed with the new circuit would lose their membership eligibility. For European players, that would also make them ineligible for the Ryder Cup.

Several of LIV’s highest-profile players had already departed. Jon Rahm reached a separation agreement with the league in October after his lawyer told the bankruptcy court that Rahm would not participate in the proposed relaunch, Golf Channel reported. Sergio Garcia also left, according to Axios. Brooks Koepka returned to the PGA Tour in January through a program that offered eligible former LIV members a route back.

Bryson DeChambeau, one of the most prominent players still affiliated with LIV, had publicly praised the proposed league’s business model, Reuters reported. It remains uncertain what he will do next.

The report prompted jokes on X about LIV’s business model, along with speculation over whether the league’s players would be able to return to the PGA Tour.
