Chelsea striker Timo Werner had a night to forget for Germany as he missed a sitter in their shock 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat by North Macedonia.

The 25-year-old has struggled for form with his last goal for club and country coming for the Blues on February 15.

He was given the ideal chance to end his barren spell when Ilkay Gundogan squared the ball with the goal at his mercy. Werner could not sort his feet out and his effort went wide.

Werner collapsed to his knees after he fluffed his lines and to compound matters Germany lost their first World Cup qualifier since 2001.

North Macedonia’s Eljif Elmas struck five minutes from time to seal an historic victory in Group J.

And the European minnows’ media has not let Werner live his miss down by giving him their country’s identity card after helping them out by not putting the ball into the back of the net.

A newspaper has mocked up a North Macedonian identity card with a headshot of Germany striker Werner and initials ‘TW’ for his signature.

Football fans mocked the Chelsea forward for squandering the simple chance, with one fan claiming he is the worst forward in the Premier League era since former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.

One Chelsea fan tweeted: ‘Timo Werner is making it difficult to defend him again lol’ while another claimed the German striker ‘is not a serious footballer.’

While one Liverpool fan posted: ‘Klopp really looked at Werner and said, “nah I’m alright”’ in relation to Werner being linked with a move to Liverpool before joining the west Londoners.

Werner joined Stamford Bridge having scored 34 goals in 45 matches for Bundesliga outfit RBLeipzig the season before, but has just five Premier League goals in 28 appearances for the Blues.
