The man who allegedly opened fire just outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been charged with trying to assassinate US President Donald Trump.

Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old, found himself in the clutches of law enforcement after a shootout with police and Secret Service agents unfolded at the Washington Hilton. This dramatic encounter took place on a Sunday, according to Australian time.

During the exchange of gunfire, a Secret Service agent was hit, though fortunately, their bulletproof vest absorbed the impact, sparing them from injury. Meanwhile, Allen emerged from the incident unharmed.

Investigations revealed that both firearms involved in the altercation were acquired legally, raising questions about the events leading up to the shootout.

Following his arrest, Allen exercised his right to remain silent, as noted in the charging documents. In his initial court appearance, Allen was briefed on the charges he faces. He remains in custody, with a detention hearing scheduled later in the week to determine whether he will remain in jail while awaiting trial.

During the court proceedings, Allen spoke little, as reported by U.S. media sources, but did confirm that he was neither under the influence of drugs nor alcohol when the shooting occurred.

He said little in court, according to US media, but confirmed that he had not been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the shooting.

Allen, a school teacher with a master’s degree in computer science, delivered a manifesto to his family before the shooting which spoke of his anger at the current White House administration.

While he did not mention Trump by name, according to reports, he did declare that he was “no longer willing to permit a paedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes” – a comment the president took personally when it was read out to him yesterday during an interview with the US 60 Minutes program.

DC Attorney Jeanine Pirro flagged that Allen could face additional charges as the investigation continued.
