South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigating 2 South Carolina State shootings, 1 arrest made

RICHLAND, S.C. () – An individual has been charged by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in connection with one of the shootings that happened at South Carolina State University on Saturday night.

Both incidents took place on the evening of Saturday, October 4, 2025. The initial shooting led to the death of a woman. Further details and her identity are still being withheld by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.

The second shooting left one man injured. He is currently in the hospital.

According to SLED, the shootings are not believed to be connected; however, investigations are

active and ongoing. Anyone with information on either incident should call (866) 472-8477 or send an email.

SLED has charged Matthew Daniel McCoy, 18, with:

  • Pointing and Presenting a Firearm at a Person
  • Carrying a Weapon on School Property

McCoy was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

SLED was requested for the investigation by the South Carolina State University Department of Public Safety.
