Alexis Mac Allister’s knee injury is nothing to cause serious worry despite Liverpool’s Argentine midfielder posting pictures on social media on crutches, having stitches and wearing a leg brace.

The 24-year-old suffered a nasty gash on his knee during a bad tackle at Sheffield United last Wednesday and, although he carried on for some minutes afterwards, was substituted early in the second half and missed the subsequent trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Mac Allister required two stitches after a deep cut to his knee, with manager Jurgen Klopp saying last Friday that it ‘doesn’t look good’. The midfielder posted an update on social media on Tuesday afternoon which had some fans worried it was a more serious blow.

Some fans feared that Mac Allister had suffered ligament damage due to his pictures but this is not the case and it is a mere impact injury. The midfielder intended to show the recovery steps being taken to return to full fitness in due course.

Liverpool are not putting a timescale on his recovery but Mac Allister will miss the trip to Brussels, with the Reds playing Union Saint-Gilloise in their final Europa League group-stage match. He was unlikely to feature in that anyway given they have already topped the group.

Mac Allister will still be seen as a big doubt for the Manchester United match on Saturday, though, with Klopp joking last week: ‘It is not that serious but we’re in the period of the year where, if you’re out for five days it’s 12 games pretty much!’
