The filing emphasized the systemic issue of public corruption in Illinois and the pressing necessity for deterrents, advocating for a 12.5-year sentence as appropriate for this situation. It noted the long sentences given to other public officials as evidence of the appropriateness of a significant custodial sentence in this case.

Madigan will face his sentencing for his corruption charges June 13.

It was possible he could face up to 20 years in prison for the most serious charges, but it’s likely he’ll get far less, if any, prison time at all.

In March, Madigan’s legal team made a request for either an acquittal or a retrial concerning his corruption charges. Their detailed filing argued that the prosecution did not provide adequate evidence to substantiate the convictions related to bribery, conspiracy, and wire fraud accusations.

Also in March, prosecutors said they want Madigan to forfeit $3.1 million dollars as part of his conviction.
