Manchester United kept their hopes of silverware alive with a 2-0 win over Wigan in the FA Cup third round on Monday night.

Pressure was on the Red Devils ahead of kick-off, with the FA Cup representing the club’s last feasible chance of lifting a trophy this season, but goals from Portuguese duo Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes helped United to a comfortable win at the DW Stadium.

Dalot caressed home a well-placed effort from distance to fire United a goal in front midway through the first half, before Fernandes converted from the penalty spot in the second to take the game away from the hosts.

Mail Sport’s Chris Wheeler was at the DW Stadium to take a look at all the things you might have missed.

Antony out in fresh injury blow for Erik

Erik ten Hag has had more than his fair share of injury problems to deal with this season, and Monday night was no exception.

Antony was ruled out before kick-off through injury with Christian Eriksen also unavailable due to illness.

At least Ten Hag was able to welcome back Rasmus Hojlund — who had been laid low at Nottingham Forest on December 30 and still seemed to be feeling the after-effects here — and can look forward to having Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount back before the end of the month.

Ferguson’s DW legacy lives on

It is getting on for 24 years since Sir Alex Ferguson opened the DW Stadium at the request of his friend Dave Whelan, the former Wigan chairman and life president, when it was known as the JJB.

Wigan manager Shaun Maloney is also a huge admirer of the legendary United boss, and supported United as a boy because of Ferguson’s success at his hometown team Aberdeen.

Maloney used to leave school early to make 700-mile round trips down to Old Trafford in order to watch United’s midweek games.

Wigan’s Red Devils curse

Manchester United have won 20 of their last 21 matches against Wigan Athletic in all competitions.

The exception was Wigan’s 1-0 win here in April 2012 when Maloney scored.

Sir Dave watches on again

Sir Dave Brailsford watched United from the stands on Monday night. It is the third game in a row he has attended since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £1.3billion investment in the club was confirmed on Christmas Eve.

Ten Hag once again spoke positively about the Ineos influence before kick-off at the DW Stadium.

The United manager said: ‘I think it’s inspiring for the club and it’s good that everyone will be sharp. They have very high ambition. Everyone at Manchester United has to match the standards.’
