In 1995, he became the Western Reds’ first head coach, before going to France to manage Paris Saint-Germain for a season in 1997.
Mulholland’s desire to develop young players led him to work with a number of NRL clubs, including Canterbury, Penrith, Newcastle, and Canberra.
