Bruno Guimaraes reportedly has a secret clause in his new Newcastle United contract that would allow him to join Barcelona at a lower price.

The Brazilian midfielder agreed a five-year extension through until 2028 earlier this month with a £100million release clause included.

However, according to Sport in Spain, a clause would allow him to sign for Barcelona for around the £60m mark.

However, the report suggests there is a release clause price for Guimaraes and a cheaper one just for Barcelona.

Guimaraes is content at St James’ Park though and he was happy to sign the long-term contract extension that protects his valuation.

‘I’m absolutely delighted. The fans have made me feel at home since my first day here and I feel so loved in my life,’ he said.

‘I’m so happy here. It’s a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That’s my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here.

‘I remember in my first interview, I said I wanted to play for this club in the Champions League and now it’s happening.

‘We are doing so well and when I look around the pitch at my team-mates, I am so proud of them all. I’m proud of everyone; the team, the staff, the owners and the fans.

‘The city believes again and it’s unbelievable what we have done for the team. I hope that this can continue. It’s amazing what has happened in my life in the last two years.’

Guimaraes has scored 11 goals and registered eight assists in 68 appearances since joining Newcastle from Lyon for £36m in January 2022.

He helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades when they finished fourth in the Premier League last season.

Guimaraes is currently away on international duty with Brazil and played in their 1-1 draw with Venezuela in qualification for the 2026 World Cup on Thursday.

Newcastle return to action on Saturday with a home Premier League game against Crystal Palace.
