The New York legislature is considering the implementation of the NY FAIR News Act, a proposed law that mandates transparency in the use of artificial intelligence in journalism. Under this act, any news content that is primarily created or significantly influenced by AI must include a clear disclaimer. Additionally, such content must undergo scrutiny and receive approval from a human editor with full editorial oversight before it can be published.
Furthermore, the legislation stipulates that news organizations must inform their staff about the usage of AI in their operations, detailing both how and when it is employed. The act also emphasizes the importance of protecting sensitive information, particularly concerning sources, from being accessed by AI systems.
In a related development, Bill S9144 seeks to temporarily halt the approval of new data center projects for a minimum of three years. This pause is driven by concerns over increasing electricity and gas prices affecting various sectors, including residential, commercial, and industrial users. According to National Grid New York, the demand for major electrical connections has surged, with projections indicating the addition of at least 10 gigawatts in the coming five years. Currently, New York is home to more than 130 data centers, as reported by Data Center Map.
