After years of silence, the legendary Finnish heavy metal band Children Of Bodom is poised to make a dramatic return to the stage. The band, known for its powerful sound and dynamic performances, has been absent since the tragic passing of their lead guitarist and frontman, Alexi Laiho, in December 2020. Their last performance was in December 2019, a farewell show that marked the end of an era. However, the band will reunite for a special event titled “A Celebration Of Music” on February 26, 2026, at the iconic Tavastia Club in Helsinki, Finland.
This reunion will feature the talents of bassist Henkka Seppälä, keyboardist Janne Wirman, drummer Jaska Raatikainen, and guitarist Alexander Kuoppala. They will be joined by Samy Elbanna, guitarist and vocalist of Lost Society, who will take on the challenging role of performing Laiho’s parts. In a statement, Children Of Bodom expressed their intentions for the event: “We want to celebrate the life’s work of our band and at the same time honor the musical legacy of our friend and bandmate Alexi. The gig at Tavastia Club holds great significance for us, fulfilling a longstanding wish of our fans.”
Fans eager to witness this poignant reunion can purchase tickets starting Wednesday, October 29, at 9 a.m. local time, available through the venue’s official website.
The passing of Alexi Laiho, nearly a year after the band’s last performance, was a significant blow to the metal community. He succumbed to complications from fatty liver disease and pancreatic fibrosis, health issues exacerbated by alcohol-induced liver damage. Laiho was widely regarded as the heart and soul of Children Of Bodom, and even as the band members went their separate ways in 2019, Laiho continued with his project, Bodom After Midnight, until his untimely death.
The Death Of Alexi Laiho
In the current landscape of rock music, where reunion tours have become more common, fans speculate whether this one-off performance might lead to a full-scale reunion tour. Samy Elbanna faces the daunting task of stepping into Laiho’s shoes, and the pressure will only increase if the band decides to tour under the Children Of Bodom name.
The Future Of Children Of Bodom
Considering Laiho’s critical role in the band, it’s challenging to imagine Children Of Bodom embarking on new musical ventures. Instead, their future might align with bands like Death, whose tribute act, Death To All, celebrates the legacy of the late Chuck Schuldiner. As we anticipate more details surrounding this milestone event, the hope is that Children Of Bodom will extend these celebratory performances beyond Helsinki, allowing fans worldwide to honor the band’s enduring legacy.
Given how integral Laiho was to the band, it’s hard to imagine the band will move forward with new music and pick up where they left off in 2019. Instead, this reunited Children Of Bodom might look to extend their legacy in a similar fashion to how Death has been doing – Death To All is the tribute band that has toured celebrating the life and legacy of the late great Death guitarist and vocalist Chuck Schuldiner. While more details will arise in leading up or following Children Of Bodom’s reunion show, it would be nice to see if that band did in fact extend these celebratory reunion shows to their global fanbase.
