Chinese President Xi Jinping has taken another step towards a total power grab of the country’s military, prompting a grim warning from experts who say “nobody in that system is safe”.

Zhang Youxia, esteemed Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and second in command only to President Xi within China’s military hierarchy, has recently come under scrutiny. The nation’s defense ministry has revealed that Zhang is being investigated for “suspected serious discipline and law violations.”

While the official announcement was brief, spanning just 86 words, the implications of this investigation are far-reaching, affecting not only Zhang but also Liu Zhenli, another key figure within the military commission. This development signals a shift of considerable consequence within China’s military ranks.

With China’s military structure significantly altered, it raises questions on how the country’s stance on Taiwan will change.

China has long claimed Taiwan as its own and has not hesitated to assert its willingness to reclaim the island by force if deemed necessary. Tensions have escalated recently, particularly following the announcement of a significant arms deal between Taiwan and the United States, prompting China to conduct extensive military drills around Taiwan last month.

Experts like Thomas suggest that this recent internal purge within the military might temporarily weaken China’s stance towards Taiwan by creating immediate disarray among its high command. However, in the long run, it could result in a more unified and less corrupt leadership, potentially enhancing China’s military capabilities and fortifying its position.
