Spain closes airspace to US planes involved in Iran war: defense minister

Spain has taken a significant step by shutting its airspace to American aircraft engaged in operations against Iran. This move extends beyond Spain’s earlier refusal to allow the use of its shared military bases, as announced by Defense Minister Margarita Robles on Monday.

“We do not permit the use of our military bases or our airspace for any activities linked to the conflict in Iran,” Robles stated during a press briefing in Madrid.

The Spanish daily, El Pais, initially broke the story on Monday, referencing insights from military insiders.

As a result of the airspace closure, military aircraft are now required to detour around NATO ally Spain while traveling to Middle Eastern destinations. However, El Pais noted that the restriction does not apply to emergency scenarios.

“This decision aligns with the Spanish government’s stance not to engage in or support a conflict that was started unilaterally and in violation of international law,” remarked Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo during a radio interview with Cadena Ser. He was responding to questions about whether this move might strain Spain’s ties with the United States.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been a vocal critic of US and Israeli military actions against Iran, condemning them as both reckless and unlawful.

President Donald Trump has threatened to cut trade with Madrid for denying the US use of Spain’s bases in the war.
