Google has commenced the rollout of its new Gemini for Home assistant, offering early access to users in the United States. This fresh update, which started on Tuesday, is set to replace the existing Google Assistant on Nest devices, making it a major evolution in Google’s smart home ecosystem. Powered by the Gemini LLM, the new assistant promises to handle more sophisticated tasks and engage in more natural, conversational interactions than its predecessor.

For those eager to experience Gemini for Home ahead of its full release, early access can be requested. To begin, navigate to your Google Groups settings and click on “Global Settings.” Ensure the “Add me to their groups” option is selected, which is necessary for joining the early access group upon approval. Next, open the Google Home app, tap on your profile picture (or your initials if there’s no picture set), and choose “Home settings.” You should find an “early access” option there, where you can request to try out Gemini for Home.

Once enrolled in early access, Gemini for Home will automatically replace Google Assistant on all compatible devices. It’s important to note that reverting to Google Assistant is not an option once you’ve made the switch. Additionally, certain features like Gemini Live and the capability to search through your camera history with Gemini for Home are exclusive to those with a paid Google Home Premium subscription.
