Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce On How They Deal With Internet Hate

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce made their first-ever joint appearance Wednesday night on the football player’s New Heights podcast, which he hosts with brother Jason. From dropping details about her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, to discussing her obsession with making sourdough bread, the three-way conversation ran the topical gamut.

One area that Swift and Kelce have rarely discussed, though, was their differing approaches to handling the scrutiny of their relationship. Yes, they do know that people have strong opinions about them. No, they don’t read most of it at this point, though it appears Travis used to consume more of it.

About 75 minutes into the show, the couple opened up about this unique aspect of their relationship.

Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce Have Grown Thick Skin

Jason Kelce raised the issue of what they think about what’s being said about them. Earlier, they had discussed how proud it makes both of them to see the girls and young women who have become football fans because of their relationship—people who began watching Kansas City Chiefs games to catch a glimpse of Swift and found they enjoyed the game or bonding with people they love who love football.

Eventually, Jason wanted to delve even deeper. Swift began the conversation by saying that she doesn’t seek out what people are saying. “I don’t see a lot of things,” she said. “I think basing your feedback from internet and comments … anything you feed your brain it will internalize, and anything you feed the internet it will kill.”

In other words, she treasures the relationship and doesn’t want to give commentators the chance to kill it. Swift also noted that she’s been dealing about speculation, and specifically feedback on her romantic life, for decades. “I’ve been in industry for 20 years. It’s hard to hurt my feelings at this point,” said Swift.

Travis had not been subjected to such scrutiny, even though he was already famous. “The last thing I wanted to do screw this up,” he said. “Her being calm, cool and collected made me grow up real fast.”

Taylor Swift And Jason Kelce Take Different Approaches To Internet Comments

One thing you know about Taylor Swift and her haters—she’s going to shake them off. At the same time, she’s not afraid of constructive criticism. “I’m a real constructive criticism guy, it will fuel me,” she said. “But I have so many friends who will see one comment and it will ruin their day, ruin their night.”

Kelce has given her some perspective on that. She said that he has the ability to laugh some things off. “If he’s seeing things and thinks they’re funny and it doesn’t effect him at all, that impacts how I see things,” said Swift.

Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce Miss ‘Old Twitter’

Both said they missed the old Twitter, the site now known as X, where things weren’t as serious. She referenced his famous squirrel bread tweet, noting “Twitter used to be a different thing.”

Still, she can’t be totally sanguine about the haters. She did turn her Instagram comments off about 10 years ago, which Travis didn’t learn until the Eras tour.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce both seemed to find the conversation amusing. “Can you imagine if we just talked about what people thought about our relationship?” Swift said.
