Luis Suarez wants to return to FC Barcelona this summer, according to reports.
The club’s third all-time top scorer memorably netted 195 goals for the Blaugrana in a highly-successful six-year tenure that took in the 2014-2015 treble under Luis Enrique alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, and a total of four La Liga and Copa del Rey titles overall.
When Ronald Koeman arrived in 2020, however, on the cusp of a new season, the Uruguayan was famously forced to leave Catalonia and wound up at Atletico Madrid.
Firing Atleti to their first top flight title in seven years, ‘Luisito’ found a second wind on Diego Simeone’s watch and achieved the ultimate revenge against his old club as previously seen with David Villa.
According to El Chiringuito, though, ‘El Pistolero’ wants to return to Barca at the end of his two-year deal on June 30 and does not plan to renew at the Wanda Metropolitano after falling out of favor and down the pecking order to the likes of Matheus Cunha, Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann.
SPORT say that while looking for a new striker, Barca’s sports management department are aware that an approach for Suarez could be interesting if that for Bayern Munich veteran Robert Lewandowski falls apart.
President Joan Laporta and first team coach Xavi Hernandez know about Suarez’s wishes too and have told him to sit tight. They don’t rule out the possibility of a return for the marksman, though it must be noted that Suarez is far from his peak, and such a signing when the likes of Erling Haaland and Lautaro Martinez have previously been earmarked might not excite fans despite Suarez’s legendary status.
Suarez is willing to take a considerable paycut to make the deal happen, and his ultimate aim is to achieve good enough shape to make what will surely be his last World Cup for Uruguay in Qatar later this year.
Failing this, Suarez may be close to completing his last season in elite European football with a move to Inter Miami where Messi is one day tipped to meet him a strong possibility.
