Prepare for a transformation that will linger long after the credits roll. Jon M. Chu’s highly anticipated second installment of his film adaptation has finally hit theaters, a full year following the debut of Wicked on the big screen. If you’re curious about whether Wicked: For Good includes a post-credits scene that’s worth sticking around for, here’s what you need to know.
Derived from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 reinterpretation of the Oz tale, Wicked: For Good unfolds both before and alongside the events depicted in L. Frank Baum’s iconic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its celebrated 1939 cinematic rendition. While this chapter continues to explore the dynamics between Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande), it also introduces Dorothy’s story, highlighting her dramatic entrance into Munchkinland.
The first installment wraps up dramatically with Elphaba soaring off on her broomstick after uncovering the Wizard’s deceit, leading Madame Morrible to brand her as a “wicked witch.” Meanwhile, Glinda remains in Oz, assuming a new role as its public face.
Director Jon M. Chu shared insights with People in October, describing Wicked: For Good as a reflection of the characters revisiting their shattered childhood dreams. He anticipates audiences will view both films as a cohesive narrative rather than separate entities. “I’m thrilled to bring this story full circle for viewers,” he expressed.
The film marks the much-awaited appearance of Dorothy, alongside transformations of key characters into the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man. However, fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous Kansas girl, immortalized by Judy Garland at age 16, might be disappointed. Chu has confirmed, as reported by People, that Dorothy’s face will not appear on screen.
“This is their adult selves looking back at their childhood dreams, that are now shattered in front of them,” Chu teased to People about Wicked: For Good in October. “So when you look back, I think people will see only both movies as one, not just the first movie and the second movie,” he said. “I’m excited to complete the story for people.”
For Good includes Dorothy’s long-anticipated arrival and reveals how several characters from Wicked transform into the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man. But if you’re expecting to see the Kansas girl’s face, made iconic by Judy Garland when she was just 16, don’t get your hopes up. Chu previously confirmed to People that moviegoers will not her face on screen.
“I didn’t want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with. She’s probably more in this story than in the show and yet not taking over the story — it is still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and she is a pawn in the middle of all of it,” he explained.
Starting this weekend, millions will be heading to cinemas to see Elphaba and Glinda’s story conclude. And with any major franchise, there’s always the possibility of more, especially given the film’s massive commercial success. End-credits scenes have become a popular way to tease a series’ future, a trend made especially famous by Marvel, which often uses them to introduce new characters, plot points and more.
But in the case of Wicked: For Good, is it worth staying in your seat after the credits roll for an extra scene or a teaser of what’s to come?
Does Wicked: For Good Have A Post-Credits Scene?
“Wicked: For Good” is now playing in theaters.
Universal Pictures
There is no end-credits scene in Wicked: For Good. The film doesn’t include any bonus footage or a teaser for what’s next in the Wicked universe, as the story wraps up neatly on its own, mirroring Act Two of Winnie Holzman’s musical on which it’s based. The first installment, Wicked, also did not include a post-credits scene.
You’re free to head out once the credits begin, though it’s always worth staying for a moment to pay respect to the cast and crew who brought the movie to life.
Will There Be A Wicked: Part Three?
The first two movies cover the entirety of the Wicked musical, so a Wicked: Part Three is unlikely to be in the works — at least for now. However, a sequel is always possible, and there’s certainly material to draw from if needed.
Although the musical is only two parts, Maguire’s fantasy book series continues Elphaba’s story in Son of a Witch (2005), A Lion Among Men (2008), and the final volume, Out of Oz (2011).
“There’s a lot of ideas flying around right now,” Chu told Variety about a potential sequel at the New York City premiere. “My daughter’s already writing one. She’s eight years old! She wrote this whole beginning that I actually love. But let’s enjoy this ride first.”
