RANTOUL, Ill. (WCIA) — Many people look forward to celebrating the Fourth of July with great food, fireworks, and time shared with friends and family. However, for our pets, this festive day can be frightening and may lead to anxiety due to the loud noises and unusual activities.

As celebrations for the Fourth of July ramp up, the Village Rantoul is reminding residents of ways to keep their furry friends safe and healthy.

A key step to protect your pets is to bring them indoors when loud noises are anticipated. Housing them in a crate, providing treats, and engaging them with toys can also be beneficial. Officials suggest playing calming music or switching on the television to muffle the sound of fireworks.

Exercising your pet earlier in the day can be advantageous as well. This may tire them out, making it easier to keep them occupied once the celebrations commence. Additionally, it’s vital to ensure your pet is kept away from party items such as fireworks, sparklers, and charcoal.

Finally, prepare for the unexpected. In the event that your pet gets out, making sure they are microchipped beforehand and wearing identification increases the chances that they will return home safely.

And, Rantoul said, residents are reminded not to use illegal fireworks. Instead, visit public fireworks displays that are created by professionals. Rantoul’s fireworks display will take place on Thursday, July 3 at 9 p.m. at the Rantoul Aviation Center.
