Amid a rapid rise in Covid-19 cases in New York, Saturday Night Live said Saturday it will put on the final episode of the year without a live audience and limit the number of cast and crew present for the show.

Key Facts

SNL tweeted that the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” and a spike in omicron cases.

Winners of tickets to attend the taping of the show will receive more information, it said.

Key Background

New York State reported more than 20,000 cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, the highest number since the onset of the pandemic. The rapid increase and breakthrough cases have already caused several Broadway shows to cancel their performances. On Friday evening, Radio City Music Hall’s Rockettes canceled their “Christmas Spectacular” due to the rise in Covid cases. Broadway shows Tina – The Tina Turner Musical and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child also canceled shows earlier this week.
