AUGUSTA, Ga. () – On the afternoon of October 18th, at approximately 3:56 p.m., deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office successfully apprehended a wanted fugitive after a pursuit and search through a swampy area near the 5000 block of Mike Padgett Highway.

During their routine patrol, deputies spotted a man walking along the shoulder of the 5000 block of Mike Padgett Highway, who matched the description of a fugitive they were seeking.

After verifying his identity as Robbie Newton, the deputies approached to make an arrest.

Newton, however, fled the scene, leaping over a guardrail and disappearing into the dense vegetation of a nearby swamp, about 25-30 yards from the road.

A swift response ensued, with deputies establishing a perimeter and calling for backup. Despite repeated loud verbal commands for Newton to surrender, Deputy Hawkins and his K-9 partner, Roy, ventured into the swamp to track him down.

The duo navigated approximately 15 yards through the challenging terrain of mud and water before K-9 Roy successfully located Newton. Although initially defiant and refusing to show his hands, Newton was subdued when K-9 Roy engaged, causing minor injuries to his right leg. Faced with no other options, Newton finally surrendered.

He was taken into custody, evaluated by EMS at the scene, and arrested on multiple outstanding felony warrants.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley praised the deputies and K-9 team for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork during the incident.

“Our deputies did an outstanding job using sound tactics and great restraint to bring this situation to a safe conclusion,” said Sheriff Brantley. “Our K-9s continue to prove themselves as invaluable members of this agency. We now have K-9s assigned to both Crime Suppression Teams and available 24/7 with Road Patrol, ensuring immediate response and enhanced safety for our community.”
