Topline

Avatar: The Way Of Water needs to make just $47.4 million to have grossed $2 billion and cross what has been widely reported to be the film’s break-even point, a feat it will likely accomplish this weekend.

Key Facts

As of Thursday, the movie has grossed $1.9526 billion, since it was released on December 16.

Heading into its sixth weekend, Avatar: The Way Of Water is the No. 6 highest-grossing film of all time, knocking down 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Last weekend, the film grossed over $32 million domestically.

What To Watch For

In crossing the $2 billion mark, The Way Of Water could surpass the grosses of the top five highest-grossing movies of all time—the only ones to pass that mark: Avengers: Infinity War (No. 5), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (No. 4), Titanic (No. 3), Avengers: Endgame (No. 2) and Avatar (No. 1).

Key Background

Director James Cameron said Avatar: The Way Of Water needs to be the third or fourth highest-grossing movies ever to break even, and its grossing of $2 billion has been highly anticipated. The Way Of Water cost over $350 million to make, and is believed to be one of the costliest productions in history. The first Avatar, released in 2009, has grossed more than $2.9 billion. The franchise’s third, fourth and fifth movies are already in the works, Cameron said. The sequel grossed $1 billion in just two weeks after being released, but has taken more than double that time to make its second billion.
