ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1418 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, May 7th

It’s Thor’s Day, so I’m going to give you the answer to yesterday’s Wordle Wednesday puzzle. This was the puzzle:

There are three boxes in a room. One of these boxes contains gems. At least one box has a true statement written on it. At least one box has a false statement written on it. These are the three boxes:

Black box says: “The statement on the white box is true.”

White box says: “Statements with the word ‘white’ are always true.”

Blue box says: “The gems are in the white box.”

Which box contains the gems?

The answer is: The White Box

Summary of logic:

  • If White were true → all boxes true → violates “at least one false.”
  • Thus White is false.
  • If White is false, then Black (saying “White is true”) must also be false.
  • Since at least one must be true, Blue must be true.
  • If Blue is true → the gems are in the White box.

In any case, it’s Wordle time!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

DREAM started things off strong today, leaving me with 54 words and two yellow boxes. I tried all new letters for my second guess and CLOGS gave me one more yellow box and slashed possible solutions down to four. I came up with a few, but chose BALMY and lucky for me, that was the Wordle! Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating the Bot. The Bot gets 0 for guessing in four and loses a point for losing to me. This brings us to:

Erik: 9 points

Wordle Bot: 3 points

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

Balmy comes from the Middle English balmi which means both “fragrant” and “soothing.” This in turn comes from balm, which refers to an aromatic ointment. That word derives from the Old French basme, itself rooted in the Latin balsamum, which means balsam. The Latin can be traced back further to the Greek word balsamon. In modern English, the word balmy refers to pleasant weather.
