UFC Cuts Ties With Fighter Days After Massive Weight Miss At UFC 316

Ariane da Silva’s UFC run ended this week. The 31-year-old Brazilian signed with the UFC in 2018. Her last bout came on Saturday when she dropped a decision to Wang Cong at UFC 316. Silva came in seven pounds over the lightweight limit of 125 pounds for that contest. She departs the promotion with a 6-8 record. Da Silva’s overall record stands at 17-11.

Social media account Borrachinha Depot was the first to break the news that Silva had been removed from the active UFC roster.

After the UFC 316 weigh-in, Da Silva’s coach and husband, Renato da Silva, spoke about the circumstances leading up to the weight miss.

“We wanted to get the cortisol levels down so it wouldn’t affect her health,” Da Silva said. “By controlling the cortisol levels, we wanted to cause as little stress as possible to her body. And the nutritionist opted for a strategy that would have her hold as much as weight as possible until the end, and it was too much for the final days. He doesn’t know her as much as I do, and he thought she would be able to do that.

“There was a moment this morning she wasn’t feeling good. I know her body. There was still something left there to cut, but at the same time her reactions weren’t normal. She wasn’t walking right, she was blinking too slow, she had double vision, and couldn’t focus, her voice sounded weak. She was giving us dangerous signs as she dropped weight.”

Da Silva had been diagnosed with a benign pituitary tumor prior to her UFC 316 fight camp, which resulted in her team moving to a new nutritionist to help with the weight cut.

“She still had liquids in her body,” Da Silva added. “But her physical state was showing signs of danger, her body was showing signs that it was time to stop.”

“It was too much [weight] for such a short amount of time,” Renato continued. “I think that was the mistake by the nutritionist. We trusted the process and unfortunately it didn’t work. It’s a mistake we made. I also made that mistake as a coach, to have believed and tried something different, but my goal is always to take care of the health of Ariane, an athlete and also my wife. I’ll always put her health first.”

Da Silva, who had cut 10 pounds the day before the UFC 316 weigh-in, gave up 30 percent of her fight purse for coming in at 132 pounds for the lightweight scrap.

Da Silva wrapped her UFC run on a three-fight losing skid. Da Silva was the No. 13 ranked UFC flyweight heading into UFC 316.

According to AG Fight, the UFC did not release Da Silva. Instead, the promotion did not offer her a new contract after her current deal expired following the loss to Wang at UFC 316.

The UFC awarded Da Silva two performance bonuses during her run with the promotion. One of those bonuses came for her 2020 kneebar submission of Luana Carolina. The UFC awarded Da Silva “Submission of the Year” for that stoppage.

Before she joined the UFC, Da Silva won and defended the KSW flyweight title.
