As the New York Yankees enter the offseason, they find themselves grappling with the aftermath of yet another season that fell short of championship glory.
Last year, the team opted for a strategic shift, choosing not to pursue star outfielder Juan Soto. Instead, they focused on building a more well-rounded roster by acquiring players like Cody Bellinger, Devin Williams, and Max Fried. Despite these changes and an impressive back-to-back MVP performance from Aaron Judge, their efforts culminated in another premature playoff departure.
Looking ahead, the Yankees might be preparing to make a bold move, even if it means stretching their budget. Securing Kyle Tucker with a major contract could be the impactful addition the team needs.
According to a report by Ken Rosenthal and others for The Athletic, “Last offseason, the Yankees offered Soto a 16-year, $760 million contract and made a concerted effort to acquire Tucker in a trade. After consistently reaching the same plateau — over 90 wins but no World Series titles in the last 16 years — it’s an opportune moment to revisit Tucker and evaluate the potential impact of his powerful swing at Yankee Stadium.”
With hefty financial obligations already in play, the Yankees might face challenges in signing Tucker while remaining under the luxury tax threshold. Tucker is expected to seek a substantial long-term deal, potentially in the range of $350 million to $400 million, with several large-market teams showing interest.
Nonetheless, the Yankees are seen as strong contenders to secure Tucker’s signature, potentially with a 10-year, $360 million offer, as forecasted by Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report. This move could solidify their roster and energize their pursuit of a World Series title.
But the Yankees have been predicted to win the sweepstakes for his services with a contract on the low end of that spectrum, with Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly predicting the Yankees would land Tucker with a 10-year, $360 million blockbuster deal.
“We’ve picked the Yankees to land Tucker, essentially giving them a big-money corner outfielder to make up for the loss of Juan Soto last winter,” Kelly wrote. “Ultimately, we expect there to be a club that gives Tucker a 10-year deal.”
Tucker enjoyed a stellar first half in this past season that earned him an All-Star bid before an injury derailed his tenure with the Chicago Cubs. Though that might have hurt his earning power a bit, he’s still the consensus top free agent on the market and his bat would be an impact addition alongside Judge for years to come.
The Yankees could find a way to make room for a significant new contract, particularly if last year’s outfielders Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger, who are also free agents, leave for contracts with new teams.
