He signed with Columbia in 1984, after leaving Glen Campbell, and began to chart. His cover of “She’s Gone, Gone, Gone” by Lefty Frizzell reached number 44 in 1984. His subsequent three singles, however, never matched its relative success. He also wrote the number one hit “(Love Always) Letter to Home.” In May 1984, it reached the Top 15 for Campbell.

His rich harmony vocals brightened recordings by Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Roger Miller, and many other acts in the late 1980s. On June 26, 2017, he sang a duet of “Gentle On My Mind” with Ashley Campbell, Glen Campbell’s daughter, and Kimberly Woolen. They worked together on Glen Campbell’s final album, Adios.
