Dick Goddard was an American television meteorologist, author, animal activist, and cartoonist. For more than five decades, Dick Goddard worked as a meteorologist for Fox Broadcasting Company-affiliated television station WJW-TV.

Similarly, he set a Guinness World Record for the longest career as a weather forecaster.

Dick Goddard was born on February 24, 1931 in Akron, Ohio. Vatchel Goddard is his father’s name, and Doris Goddard is his mother’s name.

His father was a mechanic for a Railway Express Agency, and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. His parents both had a fourth-grade education.

From the time he was born until 1941, he and his parents lived in Akron. In 1941, the family relocated to Greensburg, Ohio, to a small farm now known as Green.

When he was four years old, his father took him to Michigan to fish during the summer. He stopped fishing in 1973.

In 1949, he graduated from Green High School in what is now Green, Ohio. While in school, he participated in football, baseball, and basketball.

In addition, during his senior year, he played basketball and helped his team win the Class B championship. In addition, in August 1948, he appeared in his first Cleveland Browns game in Akron.

He majored in drama and broadcasting at Kent State University.

Death of Dick Goddard

Dick Goddard was diagnosed with pneumonia in January 2020. Her daughter Kim revealed that he would be hospitalized on May 13, 2020.

Kim also disclosed that he tested positive for COVID-19 in June 2020. Unfortunately, he died on August 4, 2020, at the age of 89.

His ashes were also scattered under a number of trees, including one near the WJW studios.

Dick Goddard’s Professional career

After trying out for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Firestone Park, Dick Goddard joined the United States Air Force.

After graduation, he began his meteorology career while serving in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1955.

He also received basic training at Sampson Air Force Base. His most memorable assignment was forecasting atmospheric nuclear weapon tests for the US Atomic Energy Commission.

At the Akron-Canton Airport, he joined the National Weather Service. In 1960, he joined the weather team at Westinghouse Broadcasting’s KYW-TV in Cleveland.

In June 1965, he and other employees agreed to transfer from KYW-TV to WRCV-TV in Philadelphia. He did, however, return to Cleveland several months later.

In 1966, he was hired as the chief meteorologist at WJW-TV, where he remained for the rest of his career. Since his return to Cleveland, he has worked as the Cleveland Browns’ official statistician for home games.

From August 1977 to January 1979, he hosted WJW’s version of the Bowling for Dollars game show. He also appeared in a number of episodes of WJW’s popular Big Chuck and Lil’ John Show over the years.

In December 2014, at the age of 83, he signed a multi-year contract renewal with WJW. On May 18, 2016, he announced that he would be retiring from his weather duties in November 2016.

On November 22, 2016, he delivered his final forecast on the station and retired. He was also a vocal opponent of animal cruelty. In 2013, the Ohio General Assembly introduced his Law, a bill to increase the severity of penalties for abuse, which was reintroduced in 2015.

Furthermore, on June 13, 2016, the 2015 version was signed into law.

Throughout his career, Dick Goddard had received numerous awards and honors.

He had received the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval, the Gold Circle Award, the Silver Circle Award, induction into the Cleveland Press Club Journalism Hall of Fame, induction into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame, induction into the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and induction into the Guinness Book of World Records, among other honors.
