Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger met in 1990, married three years later, and welcomed daughter Ireland in 1995. The couple remained married for a little under a decade before splitting in 2002. At the time, the custody battle over Ireland became quite public and ugly. A lengthy and expensive court battle ended with joint custody, but Baldwin claimed Basinger made moves to block his access to their daughter.

Baldwin — famous for his hot temper — drew plenty of attention to himself after leaving his then-11-year-old daughter a scathing voice mail for not returning his calls. He called her some choice words in a moment of anger. The 30 Rock star later admitted that the outburst caused a severe rift in their relationship.

The fact that Baldwin included the word “pig” in his attack is particularly upsetting, as Ireland recently explained in an Instagram post that she’s been body-shamed her entire life. “I have spent way too many years starving myself, binging, purging, measuring, stepping on scales, spitting food into my purse, and all around ruining my body because some troll told me I’ll never be as thin and beautiful as my mother,” she wrote.

While getting compared to her mother may have been a source of pain, Ireland Baldwin made it clear that her mother has been her biggest supporter. “My mom has never gone a day without telling me how much she believes in me,” she wrote as she admitted having “MANY advantages” growing up.

Kim Basinger rose to fame as an actor in the 1980s after beginning her career as a model. Her career seemingly peaked in the mid-1990s. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1997 for her L.A. Confidential. Basinger appeared in the Fifty Shades of Grey film franchise in more recent years.

For her part, Kim Basinger seems to have put her feud with Alec Baldwin in the past. The relationship between the ex-spouses and their grown daughter appears patched up.

Alec Baldwin’s current wife, Hilaria Baldwin, opened up about how that relationship plays out in their blended home. “I think my relationship with her has been so successful because I never tried to step in as her mommy. She has a good mother, who I have tremendous respect for,” Baldwin wrote in a 2019 Instagram post. “I put myself in Kim’s shoes: if my children ever had a stepmother, I’d want her to let me be number one.”

Ireland seemingly maintains a relationship with both her parents and her stepmother. In fact, she even roasted her dad at his Comedy Central roast in 2019.
