Michael Alfred Chaney is an Australian businessman and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia. He was born in Perth, Western Australia.

Micahel attended Aquinas College in Perth, the son of Fred Chaney, a Menzies administration minister, and brother of Fred Chaney, a former Deputy Liberal leader.

Chaney earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Australia in 1972 and 1980, respectively.

In 1992, he attended Harvard Business School’s six-week Advanced Management Program and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Western Australia.

Chaney was Chairman of the National Australia Bank from 2005 to 2015, Chairman of Woodside Petroleum until 2016, and Chairman of Wesfarmers since 2013.

Not only that, but he was also the Director of the Centre for Independent Studies and the former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia from 2005 to 2017.

From 1995 to 2005, he was a director of BHP and a member of the JPMorgan Chase International Council from 2004 to 2015.

On 14 June 2004, Chaney was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for his contributions to the business sector through innovative leadership and management strategies.
