- Kokane had spent a lot of his childhood years in the Bronx, New York City, but the family had later returned to their hometown of Pomona, California. He grew up there surrounded by his father’s musical work.
- In his youth, he had joined a gang called 357 Gangster Crips. The Crips, of which 357 Gangster Crips was a member, was an alliance of street gangs based in the coastal regions of southern California. It was founded in Los Angeles in 1969.
- He had started his career in the music industry with the renowned rapper, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur Eazy-E‘s Ruthless Records in 1989. There, he had co-written songs for several hip hop groups such as N.W.A. and Above the Law. He had also contributed to many other West Coast gangsta rap albums such as Black Mafia Life. Before joining Ruthless Records, he was a vocalist in the mid-1980s.
- On his debut solo studio album, Addictive Hip Hop Muzick (1991), he had been credited as ‘Who Am I?’ instead of his stage name ‘Kokane’. This was done to avoid violation of laws that forbade, at that time, the use of names of drugs in the title of an album or the name of an artist.
- For his second album, Funk Upon a Rhyme (1994), he had markedly changed his style and had incorporated a lot more singing with an eccentric form of G-funk. A year later, he had left Ruthless Records, shortly after Eazy-E’s death.
- He was then slated to be featured on the iconic rapper Tupac Shakur‘s One Nation collaboration album, along with many other noted rappers and singers. However, Tupac’s murder in 1996 had sealed the fate of that album.
