A man from New Jersey is facing murder charges following the discovery of his girlfriend’s body inside an abandoned car in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Lamont Truitt, aged 36, is accused of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and carjacking. Additionally, he faces charges for two counts of possessing a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a handgun, and being a person prohibited from possessing a firearm, as detailed by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident began unfolding just before 6 a.m. on that fateful morning when Trenton police were alerted to gunfire through a ShotSpotter notification. Concurrently, emergency services received 911 calls reporting a woman with gunshot injuries. Officers arrived at the scene to find a 25-year-old woman wounded in the leg, who was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

Around the same time, another 911 call reported that a woman had been shot multiple times by a man who subsequently fled in a silver, four-door car, according to the prosecutor’s office. Initially, authorities were unable to locate this second victim.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the second victim, identified as 32-year-old Alyssia Murphy, had been in a vehicle with the 25-year-old woman when an argument erupted with Murphy’s boyfriend, Truitt.

“He then pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots,” stated the prosecutor’s office. “The 25-year-old woman managed to escape the vehicle, after which Truitt commandeered the Camry and drove off.”

About two hours later, police across the Delaware River in Pennsylvania found Murphy’s body in the Camry, which had been abandoned near the Delaware Canal in Lower Makefield Township.

At some point, Truitt turned himself in to Trenton Police and was charged with Murphy’s murder.
