Rumi Hiiragi Facts

  1. She had started her career, as a child, by appearing in numerous TV commercials and TV series. Her breakthrough arrived when she had voiced the character of Chihiro in the 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film Spirited Away. It had won the ‘Best Animated Feature’ award at the 75th Academy Awards, becoming the first hand-drawn and non-English-language animated film to do so. It was also the co-recipient of the ‘Golden Bear’ (Best Film) award at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival.
  2. Barely 14 years old at the time of its release, Rumi’s portrayal of the lead character in that film had made her a household name in Japan. The film had grossed USD 395.8 million at the worldwide box office and is often regarded as one of the best films of the 21st century as well as one of the greatest animated films ever made. It was also the most successful and highest-grossing film in Japanese history with earnings of USD 305 million. That record was broken only in 2020. In 2016, the film was voted the 4th-best film of the 21st century by the BBC, the highest-ranking animated film in that ‘Top 100’ list.
  3. In 2002, she had been featured, as a field reporter, in the high school baseball TV program Netto Koshien which provides a digest of the games of the summer National High School Baseball Championship, an annual nationwide high school baseball tournament that is also the largest scale amateur sports event in Japan.
  4. She has voiced the characters of Miya in Tengai Makyō III: Namida, the 12th installment of the role-playing video games franchise Tengai Makyō; and Yadoya in One Piece: Unlimited World RED, an action-adventure video game based on the famous One Piece, a Japanese manga and anime series.
