Elon Musk is making a significant return to the political scene, particularly within the MAGA world, by donating a hefty $10 million to Nate Morris, a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump. Morris is seeking to replace Mitch McConnell in the Senate. This major contribution was revealed by Axios and highlights Musk’s growing influence in the political landscape. Morris, a candidate who earned the endorsement of the late Charlie Kirk before his assassination last September, is seen as a key figure in challenging what Kirk’s spokesperson refers to as the “McConnell Machine.” According to the spokesperson, “If we want the Senate to change, we need better senators. Ground Zero is Kentucky.”
Musk signals GOP return ahead of 2026 midterms
With this donation, Musk signals his intent to engage in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. His financial backing provides the Republican Party with a powerful fundraising tool as they strive to maintain their congressional majorities. Musk’s move to support Morris marks a notable shift back to the GOP after a public fallout with Trump, where Musk accused the former president of ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. Despite previously hinting at the possibility of forming a third party, Musk’s backing of Morris indicates his alignment with Republican midterm strategies and support for candidates once endorsed by the deceased founder of Turning Point.
In addition to his support for Morris, Musk made significant contributions to GOP-aligned super PACs for both the House and Senate in December. These donations followed a private dinner with Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in November. Sources close to Musk report that he intends to continue supporting Republican candidates financially. The $10 million donation to the pro-Morris super PAC, Fight for Kentucky, stands as Musk’s largest single contribution to a Senate candidate to date.
Musk was Trump’s biggest donor in 2024 election
During the 2024 election, Musk was pivotal in financing Trump’s political operation and early voting initiatives in key battleground states. Pro-Trump operations received approximately $300 million from Musk, making him the largest donor of the entire election. The donation by Musk suggests he is looking to support candidates that abandon traditional GOP talking points. Musk was reportedly impressed with Morris’ anti-McConnell and anti-establishment message.
Musk-backed Morris trails rivals in Kentucky GOP race
Morris (pictured), who is running as an anti-immigration hardliner, launched his campaign during an interview on Donald Trump Jr’s podcast last year. Morris is running against Daniel Cameron, who Trump endorsed for governor in Kentucky in 2023, and Andy Barr, a congressman from Lexington. A recent survey of GOP voters in Kentucky indicates Morris is trailing far behind his two biggest rivals with only 13% support compared to Cameron’s 40% and Barr’s 25%.
Any success for Morris going forward will likely be credited to Musk. Morris has poured $3 million of his own money into the campaign, but the heavy personal spending has failed to deliver a significant boost for him in the polls. Reports indicate Morris is a close personal friend to the vice president, but President Trump has not formally issued an endorsement in the Senate race.
