This MLB offseason, right fielder Kyle Tucker emerged as a top free agent, generating significant buzz in the baseball world. However, that offer wasn’t enough to seal the deal. Tucker ultimately decided to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that has claimed the last two World Series titles. His new contract with the Dodgers spans four years and is valued at $240 million, including a $64 million signing bonus. The agreement also features opt-out clauses after the second and third years, providing Tucker with flexibility in his career path.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Tucker’s contract includes $30 million in deferred payments, bringing its present-day average annual value (AAV) to a record-setting $57.1 million. This figure surpasses the previous record held by Soto’s deal with the Mets, which had an AAV of $51 million.

The Dodgers have made it clear that they are not afraid to invest heavily in talent, and acquiring Tucker’s skills will come at a significant cost. Without significant salary adjustments, the team is poised to exceed the highest luxury tax threshold by 2026. With Tucker’s salary and a 110% luxury tax penalty factored in, the Dodgers will be committing $119.9 million annually to have Tucker on their roster.

Despite the financial implications, the Dodgers seem unfazed by the steep luxury tax bill. They see the potential payoff in securing Tucker’s exceptional talent.

At 29, Tucker has faced some injury setbacks in recent years, but his performances on the field for both the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs have solidified his reputation as a star player. Accumulating four consecutive All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger awards, Tucker boasts an impressive .273/.358/.507 batting average, combined with notable speed and power. With a track record of hitting at least 22 home runs in each of the last five seasons and stealing 25 or more bases in three of the past four years, Tucker remains a formidable force in the league.

Now, he’s joining a Dodgers lineup packed with stars. Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Will Smith, and Max Muncy have all won multiple World Series. They’re looking to make it a three-peat with their newly acquired outfielder.
