When Kyler Murray was selected first overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft, there was a palpable sense of optimism surrounding the team. Although his debut season concluded with a modest 5-10-1 record, Murray’s dynamic play earned him the Rookie of the Year title and ignited excitement among fans. Over the following two years, he led the team to a 17-13 record, a playoff appearance, and earned Pro Bowl honors twice.

The tide began to shift in 2022. Over the next four seasons, Murray was sidelined for 27 games, and the Cardinals consistently failed to achieve a winning record. This past season, with Murray participating in only five games, the franchise decided it was time for a change.

According to Adam Schefter, the Cardinals are planning to release Murray on Wednesday, March 11, coinciding with the start of the league year. Unless they secure a trade deal before then, the team will owe Murray $36.8 million to part ways with him.

Despite this hefty payout, the Cardinals are eyeing long-term financial benefits by severing ties with Murray. By acting before March 15, they avoid an additional $19.5 million payment for the 2027 season, underscoring their intent to move forward without him.

Murray’s stint with the Cardinals concluded with a 38-48-1 record. He amassed 20,460 passing yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions, while also contributing 3,193 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns. His tenure was marred by 51 fumbles, including 13 in 2021, all of which were surprisingly recovered by the team.

In an apology to fans, Murray expressed regret, stating, “I am sorry I failed us.” Nevertheless, his career is far from over. As a former top draft pick and still under 30, he is likely to find a new team. Whether he signs a long-term contract or takes on a short-term role, perhaps as a backup, Murray’s presence in the NFL seems assured as the new season approaches.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals will start looking for their next quarterback. Their other signal callers are long-time journeyman Jacoby Brissett and second-year quarterback Kedon Slovis, who threw two passes for -2 yards last season. The team has the third pick in this year’s draft, though there’s not a clear-cut quarterback selection at that slot.

So, it could be a tough year for the Cardinals. At least they’ll have some salary cap relief to work on rebuilding the roster.
